My Bio

RETURNING TO THE SOURCE:

Drawing comics was my childhood passion. I would draw everyday, following a strict schedule that would allow maximum time during the day to draw, before and after school, some time to work out, but less time to sleep, and never any TV. I drank ice coffee all the time, looked tired often, but was always ready to proudly show my latest comic art.

Though my interest was in comic art, my career as a professional artist actually began in the field of Graphic Design. I worked as a graphic designer for over 20 years, for several major companies, in both freelance and full time capacity. In 2000, Captured Action was launched and its job was to provide graphic art and illustration services for web and for print. A decade passed. Captured Action was doing well and I was always busy, but I began to think more and more about the comic artwork of my youth.

And as the realization of how much I missed comics gradually dawned on me, the memory of a long-ago conversation formed in my mind. The memory of a person telling me how awesome it would be if my comic art was animated.

Late 2012, I completing the last of my current projects and temporarily closed my business. For the next 8 years I studied 3D modeling and animation exclusively, working each day sometimes 12 hours or more. I watched every online tutorial I could find, and read and studied all books about animation I could get my hands on. My goal was simply this: I wanted to give my comic art the ability to move.

I'm Rob Holcomb, animator with a background in comics.

The General Manager stood at the entrance to my cubicle. I could see in her face the weariness she felt from the month-end reports she had been working on. She said to me, "So now that you're full-time, Rob, you should do something to fix up your cubicle. Liven it up some, decorate it. Maybe get a plant." So during my lunch break, I walked around in the outdoor garden section of a nearby Target superstore until I found the perfect plant. It was a big palm tree. Now I'm a fairly strong guy, but this tree was hard even for me to carry. But it was worthwhile and I was vastly pleased with myself as I loaded it carefully into the bed of my truck,

A few times in my career, I landed great full-time graphic design jobs by starting out just as a temp. I remember once hearing my supervisor telling the other artists about how she first met me. "Rob was just there", she said. "I looked out from my office window, and I didn't know who he was or what he was doing. He was just standing around talking to everybody." I laughed while she continued, " When I went over to him, he told me he was hoping to get the temp position and had just come from his interview in human resources." So the official version of this story is that I had gotten lost on my way back down to the lobby, and somehow had en

When I recently went back to redo my website, dragging out my reference books and placing them within easy reach, I was somewhat surprised. I had started to advertise again, a week or so before, the first time in 5 or more years, and I already knew I had to redo my site, but I was still mystified on why I seemed to get no responses on my freshly placed ads. Was my site that bad? But when I actually sat down to redo it, I was surprised at what I saw. Maybe no one's calling perhaps because my phone number hasn't been updated. Maybe the fact that on the site was an inactive email address, maybe that's why I received no email responses. Or maybe
